Please provide a brief summary of a recent book you have read. If you add your reviews at the bottom of the page I will alpha them for you latter.
Reviews are listed alphabetically by author. Series with mutiple authors, or books without known authors come first.
Grendal / Beowulf - read the Norse tales first. This book is a parody of the Beast side of the Norse tales. they made the movie, and its NOT quite the same.
Shadowrun series - by various authors - Good read, many authors.
Based on a few interesting Ideas...Tech is super advanced, Corps have taken over the world, and Magic has returned.
Its an RPG also. There are 40 books in this series, get the First to understand whats happening or get the RPG startup book.
Myth Adventures by Robert Asprin - Good series, and FUNNY.
The series is good, but towards the end, its like the ending of a friendship. You know whats going to happen and cant stop it.
Piers Anthony
Good books, Love the series, Xanth has its ups and downs, but is solid when you get into it. Be open minded and let you Brain wonder.
Issac Asimov
Wonderful if you can remember most was written from the 60's on. And contained things that are Here NOW. foundation is 2 trilogies in 1. the Role of robots and the colonization and expantion of the human race.
Ray Bradbury
Killer stuff, if you hang on tight and have an open mind of SciFi and abit of light horror. Read his books first then watch the movies. "Something Wicked this way comes" and "Martian Chronicals"....
Terry Brooks
dont read ahead if you like the books. They can spoil the whole thing as The books fill in the stoy line from the previous installments. (jeni wrote) I just started reading these books, and I actually like them more than I thought I would. I started with Armageddon's children and am now having to go back a read the shannara and knights of the word series.
Dresden Files - by Jim Butcher (jeni wrote) this is everything I love about contemporary fantasy. Butcher does an amazing job of explain how magic can exist in a world that doesn't believe. His stories are witty and fun, his characters grow with the series, but don't become invincible like many serial fantasy characters. This is a series I will read over and over. Also, check out the tv show on SciFi. There are some pretty drastic changes but the overall feel of the books is continued in the show. Both get 5 stars.
Orson Scott Card
If you can get into these writtings, you will be amazed, try to find Enders game series. Once you start you wont stop till the end.
Edward Gibbon's "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire"
An interesting look at the nature of humanity. This is a great book, an easy read and has a wonderful twist at the end.
Herbert
Dune is a wonderful world. Forget the movie, and use it only as reference.
L. Ron Hubbard
Series Battle field Earth... Is nicly done, and very detailed.
The second series Mission Earth(10 books) could/should be Rewritten into 4. Its slow, Over written, and trying to add up to something that could be made Simple.
HP Lovecraft
Love the stories, and the RPG, and the movies. Scare the life out of you. I think of these as light horror, as you wont know exactly what is coming until the end. Much of his stuff has been done in Movies as well as Shorts, rangeing from "The night gallery" to "reanimator" and "Ghost busters". Made up his Own Mythology which has been hijacked by many. As with any Artist, most of the money made was after his death.
"Eragon" by Christopher Paolini - Good read, KILL the movie it SUCKED.
1 person has said "this is Star wars with Dragons". and there is alot of correllary in that. I need to read the second book.
"Nineteen Minutes" by Jodi Picoult - mature teens/adult fiction
This is the rivoting and brutally honest account of the events surrounding a school shooting, including the point of view of both victims, police and perpetrator. While very hard to read at times, definatly worth the effort. 4.5 stars.
Terry Prachett
Disc World series is wonderful and always refreshing. Fantasy with abit of humour. never know whats happening until you read the books.
"Harry potter series" by J. K. Rowling - Good read, forget the movie. Sometimes they are a bit long, but it fills in the blanks.
"Games of Command" by Linnea Sinclair - adult science fiction/romance
Yet another stellar novel from L. Sinclair. "Games of Command" tells the story of Sass and Branden and most importantly the furzels Riley and Tank. This is a great space opera/romance with a hint of intrigue and adventure. 5 stars.
"Silmarillian" by J.R.R. Tolkien - LOOONG, SLOW, good book to read for bed time.
This is part of the Middle Earth series, made After the others, but in timeline, happens before.
"Star Doc" by S.L. Viehl - Nice series, good general read.
I agree, this series incorporates scifi, medical thriller and romance all in one. Also check out her other books not in the stardoc series (jeni wrote)
